Learn How Kings Fire is Phasing Out PFAS Fire Extinguishers

09/05/2025

🚫πŸ”₯ PFAS Ban in Fire Extinguishers: What You Need to Know

The EU's upcoming PFAS regulation will ban fluorine-based foam in fire extinguishers, with the likely enforcement date set for December 2030. The UK will likely follow the same timeline. Kings Fire is already ahead of these changes, ensuring you receive fire safety products that comply with regulations while being environmentally responsible. 🌍

πŸ”¬ What is PFAS?

PFAS, or Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, is used in foam to create strong bonds over fires. However, these chemicals are persistent and can stay in the environment for over 120 years. Removing them from fire extinguishers is essential for environmental protection. 🏞️

🚫 Why Is PFAS Being Banned?

PFAS chemicals are highly effective in fire suppression, but they come with severe environmental risks. These substances are "forever chemicals", meaning they don't break down easily, leading to long-term contamination of water and soil. 🌿

🌱 Kings Fire's PFAS-Free Fire Extinguishers

We are excited to offer PFAS-free fire extinguishers that meet all regulatory standards. Our Green Crosshair symbol, introduced this year under The Green Range, signifies that our products are PFAS-free and environmentally responsible. πŸ”°

πŸ”„ Phase-Out Timeline for PFAS Fire Extinguishers

Here's what's changed:

  • 🧯 Foam Fire Extinguishers: The AFFF 6ltr foam extinguishers and 9ltr foam extinguishers were phased out around February 2025 in line with our suppliers. Our entire foam fire extinguisher range is now all PFAS-free foam.

  • 🧯 MultiChem Foam Extinguishers: Discontinued around February 2025. We will offer alternative PFAS-free solutions, such as wet chemical extinguishers or high-performance foam extinguishers.

  • 🧯 Alcohol Resistant Foam Extinguishers: Discontinued around February 2025. At present there is no alternative although Kings Fire do have some left in stock for our clients.

  • 🧯 Water Fire Extinguishers: The 6ltr water fire extinguishers containing additives have been replaced by plain water models, which are eco-friendly and pass conductivity tests for electrical fires.

  • 🧯 Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers: Both 3ltr wet chemical fire extinguishers and 6ltr wet chemical fire extinguishers containing PFAS have been replaced by PFAS-free variants.

❌ Do You Need to Replace Your Foam Fire Extinguishers?

No immediate action is required if your fire extinguishers contain PFAS. They don't need replacing until they are due (5 years from installation) or become unserviceable. If a fire protection company tells you to replace your fire extinguishers early due to PFAS, seek a second opinion. πŸ”„

πŸ’Έ Cost Considerations for PFAS-Free Fire Extinguishers

While the new PFAS-free foam fire extinguishers may come with a slightly higher price tag due to extensive testing and certification, Kings Fire will work to keep costs as low as possible. We are also committed to recommending foam extinguishers only in areas with Class 'B' fire risks. For non-Class 'B' areas, plain water extinguishers will be specified instead. πŸ”₯πŸ’§
